Get ready for a frosty fairytale setting this festive season! Kensington Palace is about to transform its majestic grounds into a winter wonderland, complete with a sprawling ice rink. Yes, you heard it right! Kensington Palace ice skating is about to become the talk of the town.
The Kensington and Chelsea council, always keen on adding a sprinkle of magic to the holidays, has given a nod to this icy adventure. But, of course, with the Royal family and several diplomats residing in the vicinity, safety is paramount. Fear not, for stringent measures are in place to ensure the security of these high-profile neighbors. The Finnish and Russian ambassadors, who reside next door, can rest easy knowing that a towering three-meter fence will stand guard between the festivities and their official residences.
James Husband, the esteemed chairman of the planning committee, expressed his support for the event, emphasizing the council’s commitment to the safety and security of the Royal family and nearby diplomats.
Icy Extravaganza
And what can visitors expect from this icy extravaganza? A whopping 10,350 visitors daily are anticipated to be drawn to this winter ice rink. From November all the way to January 2024, the palace grounds will be buzzing with excitement. Apart from the massive 2,800sqm ice rink that can accommodate 750 skaters at a time, there will be an array of food and drink stalls to satiate your festive cravings. And for those seeking a dash of adrenaline, fairground rides await!
For those wondering, where is Kensington Palace in relation to Buckingham Palace? Well, Kensington Palace, the official London residence of Prince William and Kate, is not too far from Buckingham Palace. The palace grounds also house Perks Field, the Royals’ designated helicopter landing spot. This very field has witnessed a myriad of events in the past, from design festivals to grand Burberry fashion shows, thanks to Buckingham Palace’s initiative to rent out the space as a means to supplement the Royal household’s income.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their three children, might have moved to Adelaide Cottage at Windsor Castle last year, but the legacy of festive celebrations continues at Kensington.
Cllr Josh Rendall, Kensington and Chelsea’s lead member for local economy and employment, couldn’t contain his excitement. “It’s brilliant to have another amazing space in our borough with this new winter ice rink for everyone to enjoy. My hope is that this will be a real boon for local businesses in the lead up to Christmas and the festive season.”
So, lace up your skates and glide into a royal winter wonderland this Christmas at Kensington Palace!
