Early this week, London residents were greeted with an unexpected and awe-inspiring sight as they encountered enormous sculptures of Godzilla and Kong emerging from the river thames.
It’s not every day that Londoners’ morning routines are disrupted by life-size cinematic monsters. This particular morning, the city was abuzz with the presence of towering sculptures of Godzilla and Kong near the Thames, making for an unforgettable spectacle.
The river showcased Godzilla’s iconic spikes, while Kong’s massive hand was seen demolishing a red telephone booth on the South Bank. This dramatic display celebrates the launch of the new film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, set to premiere this week. The giant figures made their dramatic entrance into London at 2 am today and will continue to awe spectators in the city until 7 pm tonight (March 25).
These sculptures are built to actual size, being impressively large and collectively weighing more than a ton. Godzilla stretches 20 meters wide, akin to a tennis court, and features over 70 pulsing pink lights. Kong’s hand towers nearly five meters high, with his head measuring seven meters across. Kong’s appearance is further enhanced with over 30 meters of fur for a startlingly realistic effect.
Creating these massive figures was a labor-intensive process, involving 40 people who dedicated a total of 6,326 hours over two months. Godzilla’s head and body sculpting took 45 days, and painting both figures required 51 days.
In addition to these monumental sculptures, the OXO tower has been temporarily renamed the ‘GxK’ Tower for two nights in honor of the event.
Adam Wingard, the director of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, expressed his excitement, stating, “The essence of the Monsterverse is brought to life when these Titans clash in real-world settings. Witnessing Godzilla and Kong entering London through Hollow Earth portals was truly astonishing. It reminded me of the wonder I felt as a child watching classic Toho movies on a Saturday afternoon.”
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to hit theaters this Friday, March 29, with the Godzilla and Kong sculptures available for public viewing in London until 7 pm tonight (March 25).
